Chapter 16 Vocab Flashcards
Alveolar ventilation
volume of air that actually reaches air sacs each minute
Automatic transport ventilator (ATV)
device that enables hands-free PPV through advanced airway
Bag-valve-mask device
manual piece of equipment used to deliver artificial ventilations through a mask with a bag
Bronchoconstriction
narrowing of the bronchiolar passageway
Capnography
measurement and graph over time of CO2 level in exhaled air sample
Capnometry
measurment of the level of CO2 in exhaled air
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
device that delivers constant increased air pressure to airway
Flow-restricted oxygen powered ventilation device (FROPVD)
High pressure O2 delivery system that is manually triggered to provide PPV
French units (Fr.)
unit of measuring the diameter of medical devices such as suction or catheters. 1 Fr. = .33mm
Head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver
technique used to manually position the head and jaw to open airway
Hypercapnia
increased level of CO2 in blood
Hypocapnia
decreased level of CO2 in blood
Hypoxia
decreased level of O2 at cellular level
Laryngospasm
involuntary closure of vocal cords over glottis
Minute volume
amount of air moved in and out lungs each minute. TV x RR = MV
Modified jaw-thrust maneuver
technique used to manually position the jaw to open the airway in pts with suspected C-spine injury
Nasopharyngeal airway
short tube inserted through nose so that bevel rests in the pharynx to prevent tongue from occluding airway.
Oropharyngeal airway
Curved plastic device inserted in mouth that prevents tongue from occluding airway
Peak expiratory flow rate (PERF)
maximal rate that air can be forcefully exhaled from lungs, measured in L/M
Peak flow meter
device to measure maximum expiratory flow rate
Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)
maintaining positive pressure in airway during expiration to prevent alveoli collapse
Positive pressure ventilation (PPV)
artificial ventilation by forcing air into airway
Pulmonary edema
interstitial fluid in lungs creating greater diffusion distance for O2 and CO2 across respiratory membrane
Pulse oximetry
measure of O2 saturation on hemoglobin using infrared light
Relatively contraindicated
situation where a treatment is not usually advised, but where positives outweigh risks
Spirometry
measurement of various lung volumes and flow rates
Tracheostomy
surgical opening in the trachea to establish airway
Trauma chin lift
technique used to displace the mandible anteriorly to open airway w/out hyperextending C-spine
Tripod position
position where pt leans forward, supporting himself with his arms from respiratory distress
Ventilation
movement of air in and out of lungs
Ventilation-perfusion mismatch
condition where either pulmonary circulation or alveolar ventilation is impaired
Yankauer
hollow, rigid device that attaches to suction tubing to allow suctioning of oropharynx
