Chapter 37 Vocab Flashcards
Basilar skull
floor of the cranial cavity, includes parts of the temporal and occipital bones
Brain herniation
When ICP increases to where it starts pushing the brain towards the least resistance
Closed skull fracture
break in the skull where the skin remains intact
Concussion
brain injury where neurological function is temporarily disrupted, with no structural damage
Coup-contrecoup injuries
condition where the brains has 2 points of impact on the skull, on the initial impact, and then the rebound
Cushing’s reflex
bradycardia due to hypertension, occurs in response to severe ICP
Cushing’s triad
Cushing’s reflex with irregular breathing pattern
Depressed skull fracture
broken cranial bones, where bones are pushed lower than the normal skull contour
Diffuse axonal injury
non-focal brain trauma where axons of neurons are injured by shearing or tearing
Le Fort criteria
criteria for classifying fractures of the midface
Le Fort I Fractures
breaks involving maxilla only, creating slight instability and deformity
Le Fort II fractures
break of the maxilla and nasal bones
Le Fort III fractures
a complicated set of breaks of the facial bones that results in seperation of the facial bones from the underlying cranium
Linear skull fracture
a straight line break in the cranial bone
Open skull fracture
break in the cranial bone with the overlying skin broken as well
