Chapter 36: Social Learning Flashcards
What is social learning
It refers to the way we learn through interacting with others. It shows that not all learning is formal but also happens informally in everyday life.
What are the two ways of social learning
Operant social learning occurs when we learn socially acceptable or desirable behaviour through being rewarded for appropriate behaviour and being punished for bad behaviour.
The social act being reinforced or not depends on so social need (to belong) and also depends on the type of reinforcement and strength of motivation to produce desired behaviour.
Secondly is observational learning which is learning by watching and imitating the behaviour of others and observing the consequences of these actions. Observational learning occurs when the way we behave or respond is influenced by observing others who are called models.
The model serves as an example and through observation the observer may learn new responses learn which response is appropriate and learn general rules that can be applied to different situations
According to Albert Bandura observational learning contains what 4 components
Attention: ability to observe models behaviour and the consequences thereof
Retention: the ability to save a mental representation of what’s been observed in order to be able to use it at a later point.
Reproduction: ability to reproduce the observed behaviour that’s stored in memory
Motivation: whether the response to reproduced behaviour is worthwhile.
Which other type of learning influence Social learning
Cognitive learning plays an important role in social and observational learning. Attending remembering recalling and deciding on a course of action are cognitive processes and components of learning process.
What is latent learning
It is learning that isn’t apparent because it’s not yet demonstrated.
