Chapter 10 Theories Of Emotion Flashcards
The experience of emotions is the result of the interaction between….and ……arousal
Physiological and psychological
What is psychological arousal
It is the process whereby people become aware of situations and feeling through conscious thinking.
What is the arousal that involves both psychological and physiological arousal called
It is called psych- physiological arousal
What determines the nature and intensity of feelings
It is the meaning that one gives a situation in conjunction with physiological arousal.
State Schachters two factor theory of emotion.
According to Schachter emotions occur when we apply a particular label to general physical arousal and the experience depends on 1 autonomic arousal and the cognitive interpretation of the arousal.
Stimulation>arousal>appraisal>emotion>behaviour
Schachter believed that when we’re aroused we have a need to interpret our feelings and the type of emotion we experience depends on our interpretation of the arousal according to context
Schachter concluded that the conscious experience of the physiological arousal and the conscious experience of the meaning of the stimulus situation are equally important and integrated component of emotion.
State the cognitive appraisal theory
The cognitive appraisal Theory claims that the components of physiological arousal and cognitive processes aren’t equally important in the interpretation of emotion.
According the the theory the important requirements for the interpretation of emotion is the cognitive content of the stimulus situation the meaning attached to the stimulus situation at that moment is more important than the physiological arousal.
What is the process of the cognitive appraisal theory
- You perceive the stimulus situation and categorise it according to the concepts you’re familiar with.
- Primary appraisal occurs where on the basis of past experience or knowledge you appraise or weigh up the situation as either threatening or non threatening.
- The emotion is differentiated depending on the nature of the primary appraisal an appropriate emotion differentiates.
- Physiological arousal or body changes accompany or follow the event.
Stimulation>primary appraisal>differentiation>secondary appraisal>physiological arousal
What is secondary appraisal and what are the 2 coping strategies thereof
Secondary appraisal refers to the consideration of how to act and the consequences of the various courses of action.
The coping strategies are direct action where you face the situation or reappraisal where you reconsider the situation especially when new info is provided.
