Chapter 34: Cognitive Learning Flashcards
What is cognitive learning
It refers to understanding knowing anticipating or making use of information rich higher mental processes to facilitate learning which suggests that for learning to take place the relationship between stimuli and behaviour and consequences has to be assessed. Thus cognitive learning is the result of thinking and other cognitive processes.
What is a cognitive map
It’s a mental representation of the spatial features of an area a building or contents of a book. Cognitive maps generally refer to geographical areas and an example can be the route to your home or diagram showing relatability of concepts.
What is perceptual motor skills
Perceptual motor/ sensory motor skills are based on motor movements guided by perception and involves cognitive processes like a verbal plan.
The verbal plan helps you break down complex task into smaller and more manageable components so that you can concentrate on one thing at a time. You have to start by consciously thinking about each step in process. As you form association it becomes easier and soon becomes a pattern where action is almost automatic.
What are intellectual skills
They are learned skills we learn by association of one thing with another or by discrimating between different things. Where we form concepts to represent things and learn rules for using the concept to think and reason.
What is metacognition
