Chapter 3: Neurobiology & Pharmacotherapy Flashcards
What are the Functions and Activities
of the Brain
Maintenance of homeostasis
Regulation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) and
hormones
Control of biological drives and behavior
Cycle of sleep and wakefulness
Circadian rhythms
Conscious mental activity
Memory
Social skills
symptoms of sympathetic nervous system activation
increased heart rate, shortness of breath, facial blushing, sweaty palms, less pee/poo
symptoms of parasympathetic nervous system activation
increased gut motility/digestion, slow breathing, more saliva, more pee, more insulin, HR down
The relationship between what three organs are particularly important in abnormal mental function
brain. pituitary gland, adrenal glands (HPA axis). Hypothalamus secretes corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). CRH stimulates the cortex of each adrenal gland to secrete cortisol.
What are the three functions of the neuron
Response to stimuli, conduct electrical impulses, release neurotransmitters
