Crisis
Disturbance caused by a stressful event or a
threat DETERMINED BY PT
Normal coping mechanisms fail
Results in inability to function as usual
Perception of threat is based on a person’s
unique perspective and coping abilities.
Crisis threatens personality organization, but it
also presents an opportunity for personal growth
Acute and time-limited
Outcomes of Crisis Depend On
Realistic perception of the event (subjective so..focus on)
Adequate situational supports

Maturational Crisis
Culturally based
Ex: Puberty, Menopause, leaving the house at 18, going to college, pregnancy, grandma dying
New developmental stage is reached
Old coping skills no longer effective
Leads to increased tension and anxiety
Situational Crisis
Something happened that was unexpected
Arise from events that are
* Extraordinary
* External
* Often unanticipated
Adventitious Crisis
Terrorism, weather events, mass casualty, acts of violent crime (key large group of people)

* Large weather or environmental events
* Acts of terrorism
* Acts of violent crime
