How is schizophrenia characterized
Altered cognition, perception, and reality testing
What is the age range for schizophrenia

What are 6 DSM-V Criteria for schizophrenia
Delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, gross disorganization, negative symptoms (diminished emotional expression or avolition), functional impairment of some kind
Schizophrenia is more frequently diagnosed in
males in urban areas
Comorbidities
substance abuse disorder (nicotine especially/self medicating), anxiety, depression, suicide, physical illness, polydipsia
Etiology
Genetics, dopamine theory, other neurochemicals, DIATHESIS STRESS MODEL
Positive symptoms
Delusion: You think something wrong is a fact
Hallucination: hear, fell, taste, smell something that isn’t there
Illusion: Misinterpretation of real stimuli
Prodromal phase
Prodromal phase: beginning phase, when symptoms are subtle
Alterations in speech
Associative looseness (word salad is worst version) words spoken together as if it makes sense but its just random words
Clang association (rhyme words when speaking)
Neologisms (words that only have meaning to the patient)
Echolalia (repeat the words of someone else)
Circumstantiality/tangentiality (keep going on tangents without getting to answer)
Cognitive retardation (slow thought)
Pressured speech (excitement causes words to jumble)
Flight of ideas (quick movement from one topic to another))
Disorders/distortion of thought
Thought blocking: sudden and involuntary silence within a speech, and eventually an abrupt switch to another topic

Anhedonia: don’t like doing things anymore
Avolition: general lack of motivation
Asociality: lack of social desire
Affective blunting: emotional expression blunting
Apathy: Feeling unfulfilled
Alogia: poverty of speech
