Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is cohesion?
the linking together of like molecules often by hydrogen bonds
What is surface tension?
A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid
What is specific heat?
the amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1g of a substance to change temp by 1C
What is evaporative cooling?
the process in which the surface of an object becomes cooler via evaporation
What is heat of vaporization?
the quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for 1g of it to change for liquid to gas
What is adhesion?
is an attraction between different substances
Why is water such a good solvent?
it is polar
What does it mean if a particle is hydrophilic?
it has an affinity for water
What does it mean if a particle is hydrophobic?
it is repulsed by water
What is a hydration shell?
when waters polarity causes it to form a circle around another molecule
What do acids donate to the solution when they are dissolved?
an H+ ion
What is an acid?
low pH, donates an H+ ion
What is a base?
high pH, accepts an H+ ion
What is a buffer?
a solution that contains a weak acids and its corresponding base
