office seeker who assassinated Garfield. He tried the insanity plea, but was found guilt anyway

paper money liked by farmers because it created inflation and helped them pay off debt

actual gold or silver that great in value

term coined by Mark Twain that society was covered in a thin layer or gold because it looked great, but was actually rotten to the core

supporters of a winning political party are rewarded with government jobs.
Grandfather clause
way to prevent African Americans from voting. If you had a grandfather that voted prior to reconstruction you could automatically vote
Boss Tweed
corrupt party boss of Tammany Hall who stole over $200 million. Eventually ousted by Thomas Nast

wanted to change the spoils system and make it based on ability
