Pharynx

Peristalsis
involuntary contractions that move food into the stomach
Chyme
semiliquid substance created from the chemical breakdown of food

a green liquid produced by the liver; helps break down dietary fat
Digestion
process of preparing food physically and chemically so that it can be absorbed into the cells
Absorption
transfer of nutrients from the intestines to the cells

process of expelling wastes
Enema
a specific amount of water that is introduced into the colon to stimulate the elimination of stool
Rectal Suppository
a med given rectally to cause a BM
Tap water enema (TWE)
500-1000 mL of H2O from a faucet
Soapsuds enema (SSE)
500-1000 mL of H2O w/ 5 mL of mild castile soap
Saline enema
500-1000 mL of H2O w/ 2 teaspoons of salt
Commercially prepared enema
120 mL solution; may have oil or other additive
when must ova and parasites tests be taken to the lab
specimen must be taken the lab immediately as stool must be warm
Ostomy
surgical creation of an opening from an area inside the body to the outside
