Team members:
Pull in same direction, communicate objectives/needs, willing to sacrifice, trust, shared mission.
Formal team:
Defined by formal organization structure (vertical: functional or command team).
Cross functional team:
Horizontal is a committee with cross-functional membership, special purpose is project teams.
Self-managed teams:
Supervised by elected employee, diverse skills/functions, access to resources, team can make decisions.
Dilemma of teams:
Give up independence, free riders, sometimes dysfunctional.
Common dysfunctions of teams:
Lack of trust/commitment/accountability, fear of conflict, inattention to results (effective teams have opposite traits).
Successful teams should consider:
Defining roles, establishing norms, setting goals.
Work team effectiveness based on:
Output, personal satisfaction, capacity to adapt and learn.
Model of team effectiveness:
Team size/roles, characteristics influence processes, manage team development, direct processes in positive manner.
Virtual teams (innovative use of teams):
Use technology to build relationships, shape culture through technology, monitor progress and reward members.
Global teams:
Cross-border work teams, members from different nationalities, may operate virtually.
Size of team:
Team performance and productivity peaks at five members.
Diversity of team:
Diverse skills/knowledge/experience produce innovative solutions.
Member roles:
Both task and social roles.
