Chapter 16 Supply and attack line evolutions Flashcards
A method of loading hose on a vehicle that results in a hose appearance that resembles accordion section. This is achieved by standing the hose on its edge and laying it side to side in the hose bed.
Accordion hose load
The delivery of water from an attack engine to a handline, which discharges the water onto the fire.
Attack line operations
A nozzle with a tip that can be separated from the shut-off valve.
Breakaway type nozzle
: A hose loading method used when one long hose line is needed; the end of the last length of a hose in one bed of a split hose bed is coupled to the beginning of the first length of hose in the opposite bed.
Combination hose load
A short fold placed in a hose when loading the hose into a hose bed; the fold keeps the hose properly oriented and prevents the coupling from turning in the hose bed.
Dutchman
A hose loading method in which the hose is laid flat and stacked on top of the previous section.
Flat hose load
A method of laying a supply line where the line starts at the water source and ends at the attack engine. This is also referred to as the straight hose lay.
Forward hose lay
A specialized type of valve that can be placed on a hydrant and that allows another engine to increase the supply pressure without interrupting flow.
Four-way hydrant valve
Those places where a hose line encounters resistance, such as corners, doorways, and stairs.
Friction points
A hose and nozzle that can be held and directed by hand.
Handline
A hose loading method in which the hose is laid on its edge around the perimeter of the hose bed so that it resembles a horseshoe.
Horseshoe hose load
A hose loading method that allows a single fire fighter to flake out the necessary amount of hose from the shoulder while advancing toward the fire; this load avoids having to maneuver the hose lines around obstacles and helps to prevent sharp kinks.
Minuteman hose load
A hose loading method similar to the flat hose load used for supply lines, except the female end of the hose line is preconnected to a pump discharge outlet, and a nozzle is attached to the male end of the hose line.
Preconnected flat hose load
A method of laying a supply line where the supply line starts at the attack engine and ends at the water source.
Reverse hose lay
A hose bed arranged to enable the engine to lay out either a single supply line or two supply lines simultaneously.
Split hose bed
