Chapter 15 Fire Hose Appliances and Nozzles Flashcards
A device that allows fire hose couplings to be safely interconnected with couplings of different sizes, threads, or mating surfaces or that allows fire hose couplings to be safely connected to other appliances.
Adapter
A nozzle that allows the operator to select a desired flow from several settings.
Adjustable-gallonage fog nozzle
Hose designed to be used by trained fire fighters and fire brigade members to combat fires beyond the incipient stage.
Attack hose
A nozzle that can deliver a wide range of water stream flows. As the pressure at the nozzle increases or decreases, an internal spring-loaded piston moves in or out to adjust the size of the opening.
Automatic-adjusting fog nozzle
Valves used on nozzles, gated wyes, and engine discharge gates. They consist of a ball with a hole in the middle of the ball.
Ball valves
A noncollapsible hose used under positive pressure having an elastomeric or thermoplastic tube, a braided or spiraled reinforcement, and an outer protective cover.
Booster hose (booster line)
A nozzle with a tip that can be separated from the shut-off valve.
Breakaway type nozzle
A nozzle that can be placed in confined spaces such as cellars or basements. The nozzle spins, spreading water over a large area.
Bresnan distributor nozzle
Valves that are found on the large pump intake connections where the suction hose connects to the suction side of the fire pump.
Butterfly valves
A nozzle used to fight fires in cellars or basements and other inaccessible places. The device works by spreading water in a wide pattern as the nozzle is lowered through a hole into the cellar.
Cellar nozzle
A mechanical device installed within a piping system that allows water to flow in only one direction.
Clapper mechanism
A device that is permanently mounted on and operated from a vehicle and equipped with a piping system that delivers water to the gun.
Deck gun
A hose adaptor that is used to join two male hose couplings.
Double-female adaptor
A hose constructed with two layers of woven fibers.
Double-jacket hose
A hose adapter that is used to join two female hose couplings.
Double-male adapter
A nozzle mounted on the end of an aerial device that is capable of delivering large amounts of water into a fire or exposed building from an elevated position.
Elevated master stream appliance
Streams of water or extinguishing agents.
Fire streams
A nozzle that delivers a set number of gallons per minute (liters per minute) as per the nozzle’s design, no matter what pressure is applied to the nozzle.
Fixed-gallonage fog nozzle
A nozzle that is placed at the end of a fire hose and can be adjusted to produce a straight stream or to separate the water into droplets to produce a variety of fog streams.
Fog-stream nozzle
A hose designed to meet specialized requirements for fighting wildland fires.
Forestry fire hose
Valves found on hydrants and sprinkler systems. Rotating a spindle causes a gate to move slowly across the opening.
Gate valves
A valved device that splits a single hose into two separate hose, allowing each hose to be turned on and off independently.
Gated wye
A nozzle with a rated discharge of less than 350 gpm (1325 L/min).
Handline nozzle
A short section of supply hose that is used to draft water from a static source such as a river, lake, or portable drafting basin to the suction side of the pump on a fire department engine or into a portable pump.
Hard suction hose
Indicators on the male and female threaded couplings that indicate where the threads start. These indicators should be aligned before fire fighters start to thread the coupling together.
Higbee indicators
A piece of hardware (excluding nozzles) generally intended for connection to fire hose to control or convey water.
Hose appliance
A device that protects a hose when it is necessary for a vehicle to drive over a hose.
Hose bridge
A device used to compress a fire hose to stop water flow.
Hose clamp
A device used to stop a leak in a fire hose or to join hose that have damaged couplings.
Hose jacket
The inside portion of a hose that is in contact with the flowing water; also called the hose inner jacket.
Hose liner
A device that is placed on the edge of a roof and is used to protect hose as it is hoisted up and over the roof edge.
Hose roller
A monitor that attaches to the rungs of a vehicle-mounted aerial ladder.
Ladder pipe
A hose 3.5 in. (89 mm) or larger that is designed to move large volumes of water to supply master stream appliances, portable hydrants, manifolds, standpipe and sprinkler systems, and fire department pumpers from hydrants and In relay.
Large-diameter hose (LDH)
A nozzle that flows 40 gallons per minute (151 L/min) or less.
Low-volume nozzle
Devices used to produce high volume water streams for large fires. Most master stream appliances discharge between 350 gpm (1325 L/min) and 1500 gpm (5678 L/min), though much larger capacities are available. These devices include deck guns and portable ground monitors.
Master stream appliance
A fungus that can grow on hose if the hose is stored wet. ______ can damage the jacket of a hose.
Mildew
A construction consisting of a combination of two separately woven reinforcements (double jacket) or two or more reinforcements interwoven.
Multiple-jacket
A device for use in applications requiring special water discharge patterns, directional spray, or other unusual discharge characteristics.
Nozzle
A device that enables the fire fighter at the nozzle to start or stop the flow of water.
Nozzle shut-off valve
A nozzle that can be driven through sheet metal or other material to deliver a water stream to that area.
Piercing nozzle
A monitor that can be lifted from a vehicle-mounted bracket and moved to an operating position on the ground by not more than two people.
Portable monitor
A fitting used to connect a small hose line or pipe to a larger hose line or pipe.
Reducer
A valve that is attached to a fire hydrant to allow the operator to turn the hydrant on without flowing water into the hose line.
Remote-controlled hydrant valve
Fittings on threaded couplings that aid in coupling the hose. Also referred to as rocker pins.
Rocker lugs
