Chapter 16 scientific revolution Flashcards
What was the background to the Scientific Revolution?
It happened slowly, as for centuries, they were limited by religion and old ideas. Instead of experimenting, they used logic, and religious frameworks. When Church broke down, it allowed people to question old ideas
What was the role of Math, Technology, and Art?
Math: Rediscovered geometry (Renaissance)led to navigation, military, and geography. Believed God made things in proportion, nature was inherently mathematical
Technology: Happened to people in fields. Ex: led to telescope, how to calculate tonnage of ships, and building cities.
Art: Renaissance artists paid close attention to nature. Drawing of anatomy was important
Who was Tycho Brahe?
(1550-1600), Accurate and detailed observation of night sky. Made a hybrid of Geocentric-Heliocentric model
who was Johannes Kepler?
(1570-1630): Laws of planetary motion: Elliptical orbits, planets moving faster closer to the sun, orbital period is proportional. Supported Heliocentric model
Who was Galileo Galilei?
(1560-1640): Improved telescope. Supported Heliocentric Model, and was forced to recant.
Who was Isaac Newton?
(1640-1720): Laws of motion, law of gravitation, and calculus.
Who was Andreas Vesalius?
(1514-1560): Dissections on Human bodies, correct misconceptions by Galen.
Who was Henry Cavendish?
(1730-1810): Discovered hydrogen, Caendish Experiment to find Earth mass and gravitational constant
Lady Wortley Montagu
(1690-1760)Advocated for vaccines/smallpox inoculation
