Chapter 14- Automated External Defibrillation Flashcards
Most pre-hospital cardiac arrest occurs as the result of
Dysrhythmia which is known as a sudden cardiac rhythm disturbance
Give two examples of dysrhythmia
ventricular fibrillation (VF)
pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT)
The normal heart rhythm is known as
normal sinus rhythm
Ventricular fibrillation is defined as
The disorganized quivering of the ventricles, resulting in no blood flow & a state of cardiac arrest
ventricular tachycardia is defined as
A rapid contraction of the ventricles that does not allow for normal filling of the heart
according to the AHA, what is the link in the chain of survival that is most likely to improve survival rates
Early Defibrillation
When a patient is in cardiac arrest, you should
Begin CPR starting with high-quality chest compressions and apply an AED as soon as possible
If you witnessed a patient’s cardiac arrest and AED is available then deploy the AED first and then
Start chest compressions
but if the AED is unavailable, start with
CPR
