Chapter 13-Septic Shock Flashcards
septic shock occurs as a result of
Severe infections usually bacterial in which toxins or poisons are generated by the bacteria
in this condition, the toxins damage the vessel wall causing
Increased cellular permeability, which basically allows more substances to pass through the cell membrane
The vessel walls leak and become unable to
Constrict well
widespread dilation of the vessels in combination with plasma loss through injured vessel walls results in
Shock
septic shock is a complex problem.what happens first?
As a result of septic shock, there is insufficient volume of fluid in the container because plasma has leaked out of the vessels
what term is used to define insufficient fluid in the container?
Hypovolemia
what is a second thing that happens in septic shock?
The fluid that has leaked out often collects in the alveoli interfering with respiration
What is the third thing that happens in septic shock?
Vasodilation leads to a larger than normal vascular volume.
The increase in space combined with a decrease in fluid volume leads to shock
