chapter 13 Flashcards
Invisible support
refers to support that is provided in such a subtle and unobtrusive way that the recipient is unaware of it. This type of support can be beneficial because it helps the recipient without making them feel dependent or indebted. It often involves actions taken behind the scenes to reduce the burden on the recipient without drawing attention to the support being given.
Matching support
is the concept that the effectiveness of support is maximized when the type of support provided matches the specific needs of the recipient. For example, emotional support is most effective when someone is experiencing emotional distress, while informational support is more helpful when someone is facing a problem that requires specific knowledge or advice.
Benefits of marriage
include various psychological, social, and health advantages. Married individuals often experience better mental health, greater life satisfaction, and increased longevity. They also tend to have better financial stability and receive more social support compared to their unmarried counterparts.
Quality of marriage
refers to the overall satisfaction and functioning of a marital relationship. High-quality marriages are characterized by positive communication, mutual respect, shared goals and values, and effective conflict resolution. These marriages contribute to the well-being and happiness of both partners.
Functional support
encompasses the specific types of aid provided, such as emotional support, informational support, and tangible support. This type of support focuses on the practical aspects of assistance that help individuals cope with stress or achieve their goals.
Structural support
refers to the network of relationships that provide social support. It includes the size, density, and interconnectedness of an individual’s social network, as well as the frequency and type of contact with network members.
Tangible support
involves the provision of material or physical assistance, such as financial help, transportation, or help with daily tasks. This type of support directly addresses practical needs and can alleviate specific burdens.
Emotional support
is the expression of empathy, love, trust, and care. It involves listening, providing reassurance, and being present for someone in a way that fosters emotional well-being and reduces feelings of isolation and stress.
Invisible support
is when support is provided in a way that is unnoticed by the recipient. This can prevent the recipient from feeling dependent or obligated, thereby reducing the potential for stress or discomfort associated with receiving help.
Belonging support
refers to the sense of being part of a group or community. It involves social interactions and relationships that provide individuals with a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity.
Informational support
involves providing advice, guidance, and information that can help someone solve problems or make decisions. This type of support is particularly useful in situations where knowledge or expertise is needed.
The buffering model of support
posits that social support protects individuals from the harmful effects of stress. According to this model, support acts as a buffer that mitigates the impact of stressful events on an individual’s mental and physical health.
The main effects model of support
suggests that social support has a direct positive impact on an individual’s well-being, regardless of the presence or absence of stress. This model emphasizes the overall benefits of having strong social relationships and a supportive network.f support
