Chapter 12 - The North/South Divide Flashcards
The North
Consists of wealthy countries such as those in the EU, USA, Japan and Australia
The South
Consists of poorer areas such as most of Africa, some areas of Asia and most of South and Central America
Child mortality rate
The number of children who die under the age of 5 for every 1000 children born that year
Infant mortality rate
The number of children who die under the age of 1 for every 1000 children born that year
Life expectancy
Refers to the average number of years which newborn children would be expected to live in a country
Explain how health care is a reason for a high rate of child mortality in the south
►Little access to medical treatment
►Fewer hospitals
►Shortage of medication
►Poor facilities for childbirth
Explain how vaccinations are a reason for a high rate of child mortality in the south
►Children not vaccinated
►Children die of easily curable diseases
Explain how education is a reason for a high rate of child mortality in the south
►Lack of education
►Unaware of good hygiene and diet
Explain how clean water is a reason for a high rate of child mortality in the south
►Lack of clean water
►Causes spread of diseases
►Diarrhoea and dehydration
Explain how hunger is a reason for a high rate of child mortality in the south
►Malnutrition and famine
►Children prone to diseases
►Children die of hunger
Explain how health care is a reason for a low rate of child mortality in the north
►Access to medical care
►Many hospitals
►Childbirth hospitals available
►Reduces infant death
Explain how vaccinations are a reason for a low rate of child mortality in the north
►Children vaccinated
►Protected against many diseases
Explain how education is a reason for a low rate of child mortality in the north
►Most children attend school
►Aware of good hygiene and diet
Explain how clean water is a reason for a low rate of child mortality in the north
►Clean water plentiful
Explain how hunger is a reason for a low rate of child mortality in the north
►Few people suffer real hunger
Explain why life expectancy is high in the north
○Better access to healthcare and hospitals well equiped ○Clean water supplies ○People eat a balanced diet ○Infant mortality rate is low ○E.g. Ireland - 80 yrs
Explain why life expectancy is low in the south
○High number of women die during childbirth
○Higher chance of war breaking out
○Untreated water increases the risk of diseases spreading. Children are most vulnerable to these, leading to a high infant mortality rate
○When famine occurs, poor people are most vulnerable
○Health facilities are poor
○E.g Mali - 53 yrs
How can child mortality be reduced?
☺Education
☺Vaccination
☺Clean water rsupply
