proved learned helplessness, shocked dogs. One could move away, one couldn’t, and the one that couldn’t escape its fate gave up
Learned helplessness
nothing is going to happen or change, its not in my control, I should just lay down and give up, like depression
How do women respond to stress?
talk, use social support, more likely to be helped, attempt suicide more
How do men respond to stress?
shut down, don’t talk, often don’t get help, commit suicide more
Coping mechanisms
unhealthy stressors: drug abuse, overeating, alcohal
How do we manage stress?
excersize, percieved control, explanatory style, repressive coping, rational coping, social support, religious experience
