Human Resource management
The process of determining Human Resource needs and then recruiting, selecting, developing, motivating, evaluating, compensating, and schedualing employees to achieve organizational goals
Job analysis
Study of what is done by employees who hold various job titles
Job description
Summary of the objectives of a job, the type of work to be done, and the responsibilities and duties, the working conditions, and the relationship of the job to other functions
Job specifications
Written summary of the minimum qualifications required of workers to do a particular job
Recruitment
Set of activities used to obtain a sufficient number of the right people at the right time
Selection
The process of gathering information and deciding who should be hired, under legal guidelines, to serve the best interest of the individual and the organization
6 steps of the employee selection process
1) obtain complete application form
2) conduct initial and follow up interview
3) give employment test
4) conduct background information
5) obtain physical exam
6) establish probation period
Contingent workers
Worker who do not have regular, full time employment
Training and development
All attempts to improve productivity by increasing an employees ability to perform. Training focusses on short term skills, whereas development focusses on long term abilities
Orientation
The activity that introduces new employees to the organization; to fellow employees; to supervisors; and to policies and practices value and objectives of the firm
On the job training
Training at the workplace that lets the employee learn by doing or by watching others for a while and then imitating them
Apprentice programs
Training programs during which a leaner works alongside an experienced employee to master the skills and procedures of a craft
Off the job training
Internal or external training program away from the workplace that develops any of a variety of skills
Vestibule training
Training done in schools where employees are taught on equipment similar to that used on the job
Job simulator
Use of equipment that duplicates conditions and tasks so trainees can learn the skills
Management development
Process of training a educating employees to become food managers; and then monitoring the progress of their managerial skills over time
Networking
Process of establishing and maintaining contacts with key managers within and outside the organization
Mentor
An experienced employee who supervises, coaches, and guides Lower level employees
Performance appraisal
An evaluation that measures employee performance against established standards in order to make decisions about promotions, compensation, training, or termination

Work scheualed that gives employees some freedom to choose when to work, as long as they reach the required number of hours
Core time
In a flex time plan, the period when all employees are expected to be at their job stations
Compressed workweek
Work schedule that allows an employee to work a full number of hours per week, but in fewer day’s

Telecommuting
Working at home instead of occupying space in the office
Job sharing
An arrangement whereby two part time employees share one full time job
Pay equity
Equal pay for work of equal value
Gender wage gap
Difference between male wage and female wage
Employment equity
Employment activities designed to increase employment opportunities for four groups
(Work, aboriginal people, disabled people, and visible minorities) given past discrimination
Reverse discrimination
Discriminating against members of a dominant or majority group (whites or males) usually as a result of policies designed to correct previous discrimination against minority or disadvantaged groups
