Chapter 10 Vocab Flashcards
Substances that are poor conductors of thermal energy. (Wood, plastic, gas)
Insulator
The transfer of heat due to movement of a substance. (Fluids: liquids, gases)
Convection
The transfer of energy by means of electromagnetic waves.
Radiation
Radiation emitted by the Earth.
Terrestrial Radiation
Matter with a definite shape and volume.
Solid
Matter with definite volume but no definite shape.
Liquid
Matter with no definite volume or shape.
Gas
Exists inside stars.
Plasma
Liquid changes to a gas without heating. Some water gains KE and breaks free. (Clouds)
Evaporation
Gas molecules lose KE when in contact with a cooler substance, creating a liquid. (Dew)
Condensation
Change in phase from a solid to a gas without going through a liquid phase. (Dry ice)
Sublimation
Changing from a liquid to a gas with heating.
Boiling
Changing from a solid to a liquid. (Molecules gain energy)
Melting
Changing from a liquid to a solid. (Molecules lose energy)
Freezing
Changing from a gas to a solid. (Molecules lose energy) Ex. Frost
Deposition
