Chapter 10 - Moving Continents Flashcards
How many layers are there in the Earth?
5
Crust
The outer layer, 5km to 30km. AKA lithosphere rigid rock.
Upper mantle and lower mantle
Upper is rigid and tpp bit is called lithosphere, and bottom part is called the asthenosphere. Lower is semiliquid
Outer and Inner Core
Outer is made of liquid nickel and iron. The inner is made of iron, and is solid and rigid.
Convention Currents
Hot magma rises from the asthenosphere, hitting the plates and pushing them before cooling sinking into the asthenosphere.
How gravity moves plates
Slab Pull: gravity pulls on heavier oceanic crust near trenches, pulling the plate into the mantle.
Ridge push: new crust formed by magma at the ridge and pushes the older crust away.
