Environmental Diseases
- Not infectious or Contagious
- Caused by environment or lifestyle
Nutrition
Nutrition is the nutrients that are obtained from the diet (what an individual eats).
Scurvy
- A lack of vitamin C (fruit and vegetables)
- Symptoms: Bleeding gums, reduced healing time.
Rickets
- lack of vitamin D
- Worsened with lack of calcium and phosphate
- Symptoms: Soft bones that bend under mass of body
Kwashiokor
- lack of protein
- Brain and muscle development slowed
- Symptoms: pot-belly, weak stomach muscles, hair loss, swollen legs, lack of energy
- 60% fatality rate
Chronic disease
Unbalanced diet, leading to high blood pressure, diabetes, heat disease.
Obesity
When more fat is in the body than considered healthy. BMI calculations determines whether someone is obese or not. Mass over height.
Too much salt
Too much salt causes high blood pressure and kidney damage. High blood pressure causes heart attacks, lack of oxygen, and strokes, blood supply is blocked.
Diabetes Type 2
Insensitive to Insulin. Often caused by lifestyle, consumption of sugary foods. Managed through diet exercise.
Insulin
A hormone that triggers cells to take in glucose from blood to cells. Without it cells will be starved of energy.
Diabetes Type 1
Genetic. Cannot produce insulin through pancreas. Managed by blood tests and insulin injections.
Asbestos
Naturally occurring fibres in some rocks. Can cause lung inflammation as fibres build up and scarring when breathing in. Prevents oxygen from entering blood.
