8.1 Bacteria Flashcards
Disease
A disease is a term used to describe anything that prevents the body from functioning properly.
Contagious Diseases
A disease that can spread from one person to the next easily. The R0 value is the average amount of people who they effect.
Bacteria
Bacteria is unicellular and microscopic, only a small number are pathogens.
Tetanus
A bacteria that can enter the body in low oxygenized areas including soil. Most commonly through rusty metal and animal scratches. It can cause muscle spasm and jaw to stiffen.
Gastroenteritis
Caused by food poisoning, the body tries to vomit and diarrhea to expel the pathogen, which causes dehydration. Can be treated with good hygiene.
Antibiotics
Commonly used to treat bacterial infections. They kill or inhabit growth of bacteria by targeting their cell wars or metabolic pathways. They are not effective against other pathogens. The 1st antibiotics made was pencilin.
Antibiotic resistance
Some of the bacteria are harder to kill than others as they defend themselves, then start to multiply, making the anitbiotics less effective.
