8.1 Our Immunity System Flashcards
Infection
An infection occurs when a pathogen enters the body and reaches its target cells.
1st Line of Defence
Designed to prevent entry of the pathogen into body, skin, tears, hair, vomit, diarrhea.
2nd Line of Defence
General cellular response against pathogens, neutrophils and macrophages engulf pathogens, inflammation which releases histamine, increasing blood flow, bringing more white blood cells.
3rd Line of Defence
A specific cellular response, involving lymph nodes that produce white blood cells called lymphocytes, which produce proteins called antibodies.
Vaccination
Vaccines are dead/ small part of pathogens, triggering the 3rd line of defence, building immunological memory through antibodies artificially.
