Chapter 1: Practicing Science Flashcards
investigative approach to acquiring knowledge
scientific method
- basic info on biological structures or details or biological processes
- provides info about systems that have no yet been well studied
- descriptive science
observational data
- result of careful manipulation of the system under study
- answers questions about why or how systems work
- experimental science
experimental data
scientists develop a tentative explanation to explain observed facts
hypothesis
statement of what they would see if the hypothesis being tested is NOT correct
null hypothesis
factors that differ among places or individuals
variables
statements about what the researcher expects to happen to one variable if another variable changes
predictions
-must always consider this when designing experiments
alternative hypotheses
- represents a null hypothesis
- tells us what we would see in the absence of the experimental manipulation
control
everything is exactly the same, or as close as possible except for the experimental variable
controlled experiments
