Chapter 1 Flashcards
1
Q
plasma membrane
A
A thin, hydrophobic barrier that regulates
the movement of molecules in and out of the cell.
2
Q
cytoplasm
A
The internal volume of the cell. Consists of cytsol
(the aqeous solution of the cytosol) and dissolved biomolecules
(metabolites, proteins, ribosomes, etc).
3
Q
nucleic acid
A
A nucleoid or nucleus that contains the genetic
material of the cell.
4
Q
the four levels of building blocks to cells
A
1: monomeric units
2: macromolecules
3: supramolecular complexes
4: the cell and its organelles
5
Q
two experimental approaches
A
- in vitro - studies the behaviour of molecules outside the context of the cell or organism
- in vivo - studies occur within the context and complexity of the cell or organism
6
Q
experiments which are successful in vitro often
A
fail in vivo because of teh greater complexity of the system
