Chap 11 Flashcards
Scene size-up
Steps taken when approaching the scene of an emergency call
- scene safety
- BSI
- noting MOI, NOI
- # of patients
- if and what resources to call
- C spine precautions
ANSI
Approved reflective vest
Danger zone
The area around the wreckage of a vehicle collision or other incident within which special safety precautions should be taken
Danger zone distances
50ft from wreckage
100ft fuel spill And up wind
100ft for fire
Hazardous-use emergency response guidebook, seek CHEMTREC, and upwind
Downed lines- 1 intact pile for a full span
ERG
Emergency response guidebook
Signals of violence
- Fighting or loud voices
- weapons visible or in use
- signs of alcohol or other drug use
- Unusual silence
- knowledge of prior violence
MOI
Mechanism of injury- a force or forces that may have caused injury
Law of inertia
A body in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Why are there always 3 collisions in a motor vehicle crash and what are they?
1 vehicle striking an object
2 patients body strikes interior of car
3 organs of patient strike surfaces within body
Head on collisions
Injuries to all parts
Up and over pattern
Down and under pattern
Rear end collisions
Neck and head injuries
Side impact collisions (t-bone)
Other injury patterns
Head tends to remain still as the body is pushed laterally, causing injuries to the neck. The head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and thighs may be struck directly causing skeletal and internal injuries
Rollover collisions
Can be the most serious because of the potential for multiple impacts. Expect any type of serious injury pattern
Rotational impact collision
Struck then spin. The initial impact often causes subsequent impacts.
Factors of severe falls
Adult- >20ft
Child under 15 years- >10ft
2-3 times a child’s height
