chap 1- designing & conducting a research investigation Flashcards
what is observation
the start of a scientific investigation which can be turned into a research question
what is a research question
specific and can be answered by performing an investigation. identifies the dependent and independent variables. Can be turned into a hypothesis
what is the IV
the variable that is changed or manipulated in your investigation
what is the DV
the variable that you measure during an investigation
what is a hypothesis
predicts what the results will be, states the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, states how the dependent variable will be measured, and can be supported or refuted through investigation
what does a methodology refer to
the broader framework of approach taken to investigate your research question
what does the method do
details the steps that you will undertake to perform your investigation, including a risk assessment
what does a consequences based approach aim to do
maximize positive results and minimize negative results
what is a duty rules based approach
its not acceptable to cause harm in the pursuit of a potential greater good
what is a virtues based approach
recognizes that different people might influence people in different ways. research may offend some groups and not others
what is integrity
honest reporting of all sources of information as well as true results
what is justice
fair consideration of competing claims. no unfair burden on a particular group. and a fair distribution and access to the benefits of an action.
what is beneficence
maximizing benefits and minimizing risks and harms involved in taking a particular course of action
what is non-maleficence
avoiding all harm. the harm should not be disproportionate to the benefits in any course of action
what is respect
respecting the welfare, beliefs, perceptions, customs and cultural heritage of both the individual and the collective.
