Q

Ductus Venosus

A

Carries high oxygenated blood from umbilical vein to IVC. Kinda like gate for fetal circulation

Q

Foramen Ovale

A

RA -> LA, bypass lungs so high O2 shit gets to brain and doesn’t overload lungs

Q

2 Important Things At Birth

A

Clamping Umbilical Cord - decrease umbilical flow, which constricts ductus venosus, decreases RAP, and resistance vessels chance to arterioles with much higher resistance so increase in SVR
First Cry/Breath - air expands lungs, decreasing PVR, decrease DA shunt, increase flow to lungs and return from lungs, so increase in LAP
Decrease in RAP and increase in LAP causes FO to close

A

Oxygen increases, which relaxes pulmonary smooth muscle and constricts DA and DV

Q

Fetal Myocardium

A

Fewer sarcomeres and less efficient contractile function (variety of factors), so has to adjust chronotropically. Neonate is kinda in the middle
