Challenge 1 Flashcards
What is the title of challenge 1?
How will the UKβs population change in the mext 50 years and what are the implications of this for resource consumption?
How has and how will the population of the UK change from 1971 to 2031?
It went from 56 million in 1971 to 67 million today to an estimate of 71 million in 2031.
What implications are there of the increasing UK population?
Housing will become more expensive, so less people can afford housing.
There will more energy demand, so pollution may worsen.
Food and water scarcity will increase, so less food and water will be available.
Greenhouse gas emissions will increase as a result of higher energy demand and consumption.
What characteristics of deciduous woodlands are there?
Leaves fall off during winter
3 layers - canopy, shrubbery, ground
Broad leaved trees.
What characteristics of heathland are there?
Many birds breed as well as invertebrates.
Open countryside.
What characteristics of moorland are there?
Low pH, low growing shrubs.
Preserves dead organisms.
What characteristics of wetlands are there?
Areas of low-lying land, predominantly wet and boggy.
What characteristics of marine ecosystems are there?
Water around, fish farmed - high pollution.
Large and open (71% of Earthβs surface).
How will increased demand for housing increase pressure on ecosystems?
As more people live in the UK, more areas of heathland will be cleared to make way for new houses to be built.
This will lead to animals migrating.
How will increase demand for water increase pressure on ecosystems?
As water demand, more highland areas will have dams built to supply freshwater.
This may destroy highland forests.
How will increased waste increase pressure on ecosystems?
More waste will be produced due to a higher population so more landfill will be filled with waste, destroying habitats.
How are Voi scooters increasing sustainability in Bristol?
You can find them anywhere, so they are easy to
collect.
It is sustainable as it releases little CO2.
Bikes can be stolen however.
How is congestion charging increasing sustainability in Bristol?
A certain area fines you if you drive there in certain times, this prevents overpollution and is more friendly to pedestrians.
People may just drive around it though.
How are designated bus lanes increasing sustainability in Bristol?
Bus lanes are created to encourage civilians to use public transport, decreasing congestion.
This could increas traffic jams as it moves cars into one lane.
Which region will see the most growth?
South East + London
