Case Studies - Rivers Flashcards
What river can you use for the UK?
The River Tees.
What is the location of the River Tees?
It is located in the north of England, its source being in the Pennines and flows into the mouth at the North Sea.
What is the upper course of the River Tees like?
The upper course has hard impermeable rocks.
Vertical erosion occurs here most commonly, forming a V-shaped valley.
There are many waterfalls in the upper course where hard rock lies above soft rock.
What is the middle course of the River Tees like?
As the River Tees starts to erode laterally, it forms meanders. One such example is near Barnard Castle.
What is the lower course of the River Tees like?
The meanders in the lower course are much larger and oxbow lakes have formed. There are also levees which have formed when the river has flooded.
The River Tees has a very large estuary with mudflats and sandbanks which supports wildlife in the area.
There are many industrial-based settlements along the lower course due to its ease of access to water and the sea.
What is the largest settlement on the River Tees?
Middlesbrough.
What is the length of the River Tees?
137km
