Define Autism
A person who is very unresponsive to others, have a very narrow focus. Tend to have very little for affection. Sometimes engage in self destructive behavior like banging your head against the wall. Some do not speak at all, have a limited use of language. Socially disconnected, but can be very intelligent. Do not engage in reciprocal play
Define Empathy and its relation to Autistic people
To have a deep understanding of another person. Autistic people score pretty low on empathy. Show social deficits or repetitive gestures/actions.
State explanations of Autism
- Overactive Cingulated Gyrus
- Blood flow in the brain
- Defect in the cerebellum
- Advanced age (ex. if the male parent is 50+ yo and has a child)
Define an Overactive Cingulated Gyrus
Autistic individuals may have this. Located in the brain, responsible for your ability to redirect your attention.
Explain the blood flow in the brain of Autism
The autistic brain/individual tend to have equal blood flow to both side of the brain rather than greater blood flow to the left side of the brain, resulting/impact of not having much analytical skills and comprehension
Explain the defect in the cerebellum of Autism
Affects attention and motor ability
Explain the diagnosis of Autism
If diagnosed at an early at (age 1-2) it would result in a better prognosis. But if diagnosed later, unlikely ability to diagnose.
What is a Stanford-Binet?
A type of IQ test to calculate, termed Mental Age, at which most people know a particular bit of info.
What is the average IQ score?
100
What is Fluid Reasoning?
One aspect of intelligence of your ability to reason things out
What is Visual-Spatial Processing?
Tested in an IQ test, your ability to put pictures and puzzles together
Define Standardized tests
Standardized/Standardization means everyone gets the same instructions and the same amount of time
What is WAIS III?
Another type of IQ test, another questionnaire that measures IQ
What are the characteristics of Gifted Children?
- Identify and hang out with older kids
- Have a high IQ or special talent
- Absorb info quickly
- Speak in complete sentences by age 3
- Display kindness and understanding to others
What are the characteristics of Mental Retardation (intellectually disabled)?
- IQ score of 70 or less
2. Inability to perform some adaptive behavior - meaning they struggle to feed or dress themselves
What are some causes of Mental Retardation?
- Very little mental stimulation, emphasis on learning/education
- Inadequate nutrition
- Organic problems - birth injury, lack of oxygen to the fetus, some genetic abnormality
