What is DSM IV?
Stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. It contains lists of all different psychological disorders, also lists how many symptoms you have to have to be classified under this disorder, and lists how long (period of time) you have to have this disorder to be diagnosed with it
What is Organic Mental disorders?
Problems that are caused by brain pathology (diseases of the brain) and possibility of an injury of the brain or damage to the brain due to drug use
What disorder is an example of an Organic Mental disorder and what it is?
Dementia. It’s when a person has major disturbances in their memory, their ability to reason things out, their judgement, their impulse control, and in the later stages of this, there’s changes in their personality
What is the main type of Dementia and what is that caused by?
Alzheimer’s. It is caused by plaques and tangles in the brain (the earlier a family member of yours get it, the likely it is inherited)
What is a Neurotic disorder?
People struggling with depression, anxiety. It is serious, but more mild compared to psychotic disorders
What is a Psychotic disorder?
A more severe disorder than a “Neurotic disorder.” The person has suffered a break from reality, often need to be hospitalized, and tend to be suffering delusions and hallucinations (schizophrenia)
What are the 3 characteristics of a Psychotic disorder?
- Delusions
- Hallucinations
- Flat Affect
What are Delusions?
A characteristic/symptom of a psychotic disorder of (having) false belief
What are Hallucinations?
A characteristic/symptom of a psychotic disorder of seeings things that aren’t there or, more commonly, hearing voices
What is the Flat Affect?
A characteristic/symptom of a psychotic disorder when a person who tends to have a less expressionless face, don’t have much emotion (in terms of their dialogue - monotone)
What are Delusional Disorders?
When a person has the deeply held false beliefs without any hallucinations and their personality does not fall apart. Have to have symptoms of this disorder for 6 months+ to be considered having this
What are (5) the types of Delusional disorders types?
- Erotomanic
- Grandiose
- Jealous
- Persecutory
- Somatic
Explain the Erotomanic type of Delusional disorder
A type of Delusional disorder, when you have the belief that you are loved by another person, often a famous person
Explain the Grandiose type of Delusion disorder
A type of Delusional disorder, when you have the delusion that you have some great talent or great knowledge, or that you even have a special relationship with someone famous
Explain the Jealous type of Delusion disorder
A type of Delusional disorder, with the delusion that your partner is being unfaithful, not triggered by usual behavior
Explain the Persecutory type of Delusion disorder
A type of Delusional disorder, with the belief that you are being conspired against, being cheated, or spied on. Believe someone is out to get them
Explain the Somatic type of Delusional disorder
A type of Delusional disorder, when a person has a belief that their body is diseased, defective, rotting away
What is Schizophrenia?
A thought disorder, when the person has delusions and hallucinations. They tend to withdraw contact from others, have an inability to deal with daily life events, having thinking abnormalities, and don’t have much energy
What are the (4) different types of Schizophrenia?
- Disorganized behavior
- Catatonic behavior
- Paranoid behavior
- Undifferentiated behavior
Explain Disorganized behavior
A type of schizophrenia with behavior that is incoherent, don’t make sense, act silly, bizarre, and their social impairment is severe
Explain Catatonic behavior
A type of schizophrenia, when the schizophrenic get into odd postures, very rigid, and don’t move
Explain Paranoid behavior
A type of schizophrenia, the most common type, and the hallucinations are around a theme that people are out to get them
Explain the Undifferentiated behavior
A type of schizophrenia, when one doesn’t fit under any of the other types of schizophrenia
What are the causes of Schizophrenia?
Caused by chemical imbalance, TOO MUCH dopamine
How is Schizophrenia treated?
Treated with medication that would LOWER dopamine level. Medication used to be called “Antipsychotic meds” now called “Neuroleptics”

A mood disorder with symptoms
