ch6: immune and lymphatic systems Flashcards
lymph nodes
filter lymph fluid
lymph nodules
small lumps of tissue that contain white blood cells, which fight infection
thymus
a small gland in the lymphatic system that makes and trains special white blood cells called T-cells. The T-cells help your immune system fight disease and infection.
spleen
largest lymphoid organ, located in the upper left abdominal quadrant. it is home to macrophages that filter blood.
interstitial fluid
tissue fluid found between cells, once collected and filter it’s called lymph
anitgen
foreign substance within the body
antibody
protein the body creates in response to specific antigens
immunoglobulins
antibodies
b-cells
types of lymphocyte that can recognize antigens and responds by turning into plasma cells. then create antibodies against specific antigens
T cells
type of lymphocyte that can recognize antigens and attaches to them to attack the invading cells directly
monocytes
engulf and destroy pathogens that have been coagulated with antibodies
artificial active immunity
immunity from vaccination
natural active immunity
developing antibodies against pathogens that caused an infectious disease
natural passive immunity
short lasting immunity passed from mother to child through the placenta and breast milk
artificial passive immunity
short lasting immunity created by exposure of antibodies from a person who previously had the disease
