Ch.3 The Biological Mechanism of Speech Flashcards
What is anatomy?
study of the structures of the body and how those structures related to one another
What is physiology?
functions of organisms and bodily structures
What are the three physiological subsystems involved in speech production?
respiratory system, laryngeal system, and articulatory/resonating system
What structures are involved in the respiratory system?
lungs and trachea
What is the trachea?
wind pipe; where air travels from the lungs to the bronchi
What are the lungs?
pair of air-filled sacs that permit us to breathe; they change in shape and size
What muscles in the body are inspiratory muscles?
the diaphragm (main muscle), thoracic and neck muscles
What muscles in the body are expiratory muscles?
muscles on the front and on the sides of the abdomen
What is tidal breathing?
breathing that maintains life; also known as quiet breathing
What is alveolar pressure?
pressure within the lungs
What is the primary structure of the phonatory system?
larynx
What is the larynx?
voice box
What is the hyoid bone?
point where the laryngeal and tongue muscles meet; shape like a horseshoe
What is the thyroid cartilage?
biggest laryngeal cartilage; it forms most of the front and sides of the laryngeal skeleton
What is the thyroid prominence?
Adam’s apple, protusion that is below the thyroid notch
