Ch. 9 Master's: Wellness Management Flashcards
Consists of building macromolecules from the energy nutrients. This conversion process includes building muscles and other cellular growth.
Anabolism
What type of deficiency can cause skin infections and mouth sores?
Vitamin B3(Niacin) = is necessary for proper skin function, including normal sun tolerance and a smooth, slightly moist surface.
Automatic response to a potentially hazardous situation releases energy via hormones and enables us to respond in a way we would not normally be able to.
Fight or Flight Response
What happens when the body cannot digest certain foods?
Sensitivities occur. When the digestive system cannot eliminate, the skin will try to eliminate too. Toxins leaving via the skin can manifest as an acne breakout. A sluggish digestive system can lead to an acne breakout as well.
What is one of the major outcomes that occur when glycation occurs?
Premature aging of the skin
Describe the process of metabolism
The chemical process occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. The two processes are called Catabolism (breaks down) and Anabolism (builds up).
Frying, Grilling, and Broiling
Processes that cause AGEs
Steaming, Poaching, Baked at low temps, Slow Cooker
Cooking methods that help avoid AGEs
What is one of the major outcomes that occur when glycation occurs?
Premature aging of skin
Who experiences stress?
Everyone
What can chronic stress lead to?
Adrenaline and cortisol start to build up, wearing down the natural defense mechanism, less energy and sleep, weight gain, anxiety, digestive problems, high cholesterol, body aches and pains, memory loss, lack of concentration, prone to mistakes, coping mechanisms fail, depression, lack of sex drive, compromised immune system, skin irritation or hives, nutrient depletion, diabetes, heart problems, suicide.
What happens to food when it is cooked using particular methods, such as frying, grilling, and broiling. Creates AGE products on food. Every time you brown foods, we create AGE products that contribute to our aging process.
Maillard Reaction
Created from weak molecules that have spilt for one reason or another because they are unstable, they immediately attempt to remedy that by stealing an electron from the nearest stable molecule, which is then rendered unstable. This process goes on and on and continues to weaken and splits tissue damage.
Free Radicals
Neutralize free radical because they can donate the necessary electrons without becoming unstable themselves. C, E, Beta-carotene, and Selenium (nuts, legumes, leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains, chocolate, and red wine)
Antioxidants
Includes the digestive process, the body breaks down large units of living matter into smaller units of living matter that are then released as either energy or waste.
