Power
Dependent on fear, based of negative results that might occur if 1 fails to comply
Coercive power
Power that achieves compliance based on the ability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable
Reward power
Represents power a person receives as a result of his/ her position in formal hierarchy of an organization
Legitimate power
Influence based on special skills/ knowledge
Expert power
Influence based on possession by an indiviudual of desirable resources/ personal traits
Referent power
Power that comes from access to and control over information
Information power
The 3 responses of ppl when faced with those with power
- Commitment
- Compliance
- Resistance
What Creates Dependency:
- Scarcity
- Importance
- Nonsubstitutability
Ability to influence others in such a way as to enhance one’s objectives
Political skill
freedom & ability of employees to make decisions and commitments
Empowerment
Tasks & procedures necessary for carrying out a particular job, & the reason for doing the job- reflects organizational mission, objectives & setting
Job context
Conditions for True Empowerment: (4)
- has to be a clear definition of values & mission of the company
- Company must help employees acquire relevant skills
- Support of employee’s decision making & not criticized
- Recognition of employees efforts
Those activities that influence/ attempt to influence distribution of advantages & disadvantages w/in the organization
