CH 6 Consciousness (TERMS) Flashcards
Consciousness
A limited number of thoughts to another stream of a limited number of thought — flows like a stream
Isolation aphasia
Occurs when the speech mechanism is intact and connected to the auditory cortex but is isolated from association areas responsible for comprehension and production. This allows individuals to repeat speech and learn new word sequences but prevents meaningful communication and spontaneous speech
Blindsight (1,3)
An ability to utilize visual information despite a complete lack of awareness of seeing
- Brain can’t consciously experience visual information
- Visual information goes to mid-brain (old structure), so that’s how they “see” = their body/unconscious mind sees
ex. A person with blindsight, who believes they are blind, can still guess correctly if a light is on or off—despite not consciously seeing it)
Split-brain (1,1)
Independent operation of each hemisphere through severance of the corpus callosum
ex.
Left hemisphere is verbal; Right hemisphere is verbal
Person is asked what an object is:
- Perceived from left-hemisphere= They will speak what the object is
- Perceived from right-brain= Person will point at object
Hypnosis
Systematic procedure involving deep relaxation which tends to promote a heightened state of suggestibility
Social roleplaying (1,4)
- Hypnosis theory
People act out the role of a hypnotic subject and behave accordingly (bias effect, conformity, suspension of self-control)
- No change in pattern of EEG activity
- Non-hypnotized subjects can be induced to perform the same behaviours
- Recovery of memory very unreliable
Altered state of consciousness
- Hypnosis theory
- Effects of anesthesia
- Looks at dissociation
- Divided consciousness common under normal conditions (e.g., highway hypnosis: a mental state in which a person drives for a long distance but has little or no memory of it)
Dissociation
A splitting off of mental processes into two separate, simultaneous streams of awareness
REM sleep behaviour disorder
Absence of paralysis while dreaming
Narcolepsy
Sleep disorder that causes extreme tiredness and sudden sleep attacks during the day
- Direct REM-like onset with paralysis
- Influenced emotional states
