CH 4 Nervous System Flashcards
Organization of the Nervous system + Neurons in the body (10)
Nervous system
- Central Nervous system (CNS)
Made of Brain & Spinal Cord
–
- Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
Made of Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
- Both systems are comprised of Afferent Nerves and Efferent Nerves
- Efferent nerves in ANS comprise of the ** Parasympathetic Nervous System** and Sympathetic Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Part of nervous system containing the brain and spinal cord that controls the mind and behaviour
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Nerves in the body outside pf the CNS
Somatic Nervous System
Controls skeletal muscles and voluntary body movement
Autonomic Nervous System
Regulates body autonomous processes: glands, blood vessels, internal organs
Efferent Nerves
(Outbound) Nerve fibres that carry signals away from the central nervous system (CNS) to muscles, glands, and other organs
Afferent Nerves
(Inbound) Bringing sensory information from the outside world into the brain
Sympathetic Nervous System
Action, energy output, fight or flight
Parasympathetic Nervous System
(Homeostasis) Conserve energy, quiet state
Spinal Reflex
An automatic response to a sensory stimulus that involves the spinal cord.
- Simplest form of motor control
- Don’t require conscious input to function
