CH. 3 The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What are the 2 major periods of the cell cycle?
Interphase and Mitotic phase
This is a period of cell growth from cell formation to cell division and is divided into 3 sub phases.
Interphase
What are the 3 sub phases of Interphase?
G1- gap 1
S- Synthesis
G2- Gap 2
This phase of interphase where the cell synthesizes proteins and grows. It is the longest phase.
G1 gap 1
In this phase of interphase DNA replicates. There are 46 chromosomes in a cell and during this phase we have 96.
S phase
During this phase of Interphase proteins needed for cell division are synthesized. It is the shortest phase.
G2 Gap 2
Once Interphase is complete the cell is not ready for the ____ phase.
Mitotic
What are the 4 stages of mitosis?
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
This stage of mitosis is divided into early and late phases.
Prophase
What happens during Early Prophase?
Chromatin condenses as chromosomes and mitotic spindle forms from centrioles.
What happens during Late Prophase?
The nuclear envelope dispersed, kinetochore microtubules pull chromosomes toward the middle.
Centrioles move away from eachother to the poles-opposite ends of the cell.
What is the second phase of Mitosis?
Metaphase
What occurs during Metaphase?
Chromosomes align in the middle of the cell (metaphase plate)
What is the third phase in Mitosis?
Anaphase
What occurs during Anaphase?
Chromosomes split and are pulled toward poles, cell elongates.
