thermal burns
heat, hot liquids, and fire
contact burn
coming into contact with hot objects. rarely deep.
steam burn
scald, topical burn
flash burn
produced by an explosion (lightening)
compartment syndrome
when part of the body is compressed for a long period of time
control bleeding by splinting even if there is
no fracture
radiation burns
alpha- stopped by shin bone
beta- blocked by protective clothing (sunburn)
gamma- easily passes through body and solid materials
electrical burn
large amount of deep tissue injury. may go into cardiac arrest from electrical shock
superficial burn
first degree/top layer of skin
partial thickness
second degree/epidermis and some portions of dermis (blisters)
