Ch. 17 Autonomic Flashcards
Sympathetic (From medial to lateral)
- Cell body (Gray matter)
- Axon to sympathetic chain ganglion
- Postganglionic neurons
- Axons to collateral ganglion
- Postganglionic neurons
- Collateral ganglia
Spinal nerves to sympathetic chain ganglia
Cell body in gray matter; axon to ganglion
Postganglionic neuron has axon to organs through sympathetic nerves
Splanchnic nerves to collateral ganglia
Cell body in gray matter; axon through sympathetic chain to collateral ganglia through splanchnic nerves
Postganglionic neuron to organs
Parasympethetic nervous system
Cranial nerves & Pelvic splanchnic nerves
Both have terminal ganglia
Enteric nervous system
The semi-independent nervous system of the digestive tract
Regulates smooth muscle contractions (The movement of food through the system)
Effects of Stimulation: Sympathetic
Fight or flight
- Adipose: Breakdown
- Arrector Pili: Contract
- Blood: Coagulation
- Blood Vessels: Constrict
- Eye: Dilate pupil; far vision
- Gall Bladder: Relax
- Adrenal: Secrete epinephrine
- Pancreas: Decrease insulin
- Heart: Increase rate, force
- Lungs: Dilate passages
- Metabolism: Increase
- Salivary: Little, thick
- Sweat: Little, thick
Effects of Stimulation: Parasympathetic
Rest or digest

Regulation of autonomic system
Autonomic reflexes control blood pressure
Sympathetic reflex: increases BP
Parasympathetic reflex: decrease BP
