Ch 15 Metabolism II Flashcards
What is fermentation?
The completion of catabolism without electron transport system
What is homolactic fermentation?
2 molcs. of lactic acid
What is ethanolic fermentation?
2 molcs. ethanol and 2 molcs. CO2
What is heterolactic fermentation?
1 molc. lactic acid,1 ethanol, 1 CO2
What is mixed-acid fermentation?
Acetate, formate, lactate, succinate, ethanol, H2, CO2
Where does the TCA cycle occur in eukaryotes?
The mitochondria
Where does the TCA cycle occur in bacteria?
The cytoplasm
What is relationship between glycolysis and TCA cycle?
Glucose catabolism connects with TCA cycle through pyruvate breakdown to acetyl-CoA
What happens when acetyl-CoA is oxidized?
2 CO2 , 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, 1 ATP (GTP)
What happens after TCA cycle?
All the carbons of glucose are released as waste CO2 and NADH and FADH2 donated to terminal acceptor
What are the purpose of the glyoxylate shunt?
When glucose is absent cells can catabolize acetate or fatty acids with this
What is the anabolic function of TCA cycle?
alpha-ketoglutarate used to make certain amino acids and oxaloacetate used to make aspartate
