Ch 14 Metabolism I Flashcards
What is catabolism?
Breakdown of large molc. into smaller ones
What is anabolism?
Reactions that build cells
What is the relationship between catabolism and anabolism?
Catabolism provides energy for anabolism
______ activation energy allows for ________ reactions from reactants to products
Lower, faster
What are energy carriers?
Molc. that gain or release small amts of energy in reversible reactions (NADH and ATP)
What is an electron donor?
A reducing agent
What is a electron acceptor?
An oxidizing agent
Difference between ATP and NADH
NADH carries 2-3 times more energy and it donates and accepts electrons
What are the three products of catabolism?
Fermentation, respiration, and photoheterotrophy
What is glycolysis (EMP)?
Glucose breaks down into two pyruvate molecules (facultative aerobic)
What is the Pentose phosphat pathway (PPP)?
Uses ribulose-5-phosphate to produce sugars and seven carbons 1 ATP, 2NADPH
What is the Entner-Doudoroff pathway?
Produces 1 ATP, NADH, NADH Gut flora use ED pathway
