Ch 11 - Wound healing Flashcards
What are the 4 stages in normal wound healing?
- inflammation
- debridement
- repair
- maturation
More than one phase of wound healing usually is occurring at any time
The inflammation phase usually begins with what?
- hemorrhage and is limited by vessel contraction and constriction
- serum leakage into wound, deposits fibrinogen and other clotting elements
- later this serum provides enzymes, proteins, antibodies, and complement
The debridement phase begins?
about 6 hours after injury
- facilitated by the appearance of neutrophils and monocytes that migrate to the wound
The repair phase is marked by?
formation of a blood clot and is usually active by 3 to 5 days post-injury
The maturation phase is?
the end of wound healing and is a period of remodeling
Many factors contribute to proper wound healing which are?
- patient factors (age, nutritional status, rest, environment, and general health)
- wound factors (contaminated vs. noncontaminated wounds)
- external factors (temperature regulation - bandage)
- whether or not lavage is performed
- how the wound is closed (primary, secondary)
Topical dressings are available as?
ointments, solutions, gels, creams, lotions, sprays, powders, and dressing sheets
Wound cleansers are used for what?
to remove necrotic tissue, debris and bacteria
Some products act as healing stimulants
What can benefit a wound’s healing process?
using a warm water lavage lasting 15 min. or longer
What are protectants?
- provide a protective environment to assist the healing of noninfected wounds.
- protect the skin from irritation caused by urine, feces and tape
