- topical antipruritics provide only temporary relief of itching
- used in conjunction with systemic or topical corticosteroids or systemic antihistamines

topical antipruritics are used to provide relief of itching discomfort
Adverse side effects for nonsteroidal Antipruritics?
uncommon
What are astringents?
- have very little penetration and act to precipitate proteins
- may be used alone or combined with other ingredients
What are common astringents in vet. medicine?
Tannic acid, iodine, alcohol, phenol
What are clinical uses for astringents?
- treatment of moist dermatitis in dogs and cats and weeping skin wounds in large animals
- used to toughen the footpads of dogs
What are adverse side effects for astringents?
may cause irritation
What are topical corticosteroids?
provide relief from itching, burning, and inflammation
What are the clinical uses for topical corticosteroids?
used in the treatment of inflammation and pruritus associated with conditions such as moist dermatosis (hot spots) and allergic dermatitis
Adverse side effects of topical corticosteroids?
uncommon
