What are the antiseptics for the skin?

What do antiseptics do?
inhibit the growth of bacteria and are found in many dermatologic preparations. They are used in the cleansing and treatment of wounds, found in surgical scrubs and shampoos
What are alcohols?
are bactericidal, astringent, cooling, and rubefacient
What is rubefacient?
A rubefacient is a substance for topical application that produces redness of the skin e.g. by causing dilation of the capillaries and an increase in blood circulation.
What are the adverse side effects of alcohols?
may cause irritation of denuded skin surfaces
What is propylene glycol?
- an antibacterial and antifungal
- concentrations greater than 50% are keratolytic
- used as a solvent and a vehicle for other drugs
What are the adverse side effects of propylene glycol?
erythema can result when propylene glycol concentrations greater than 50% are used
What is chlorhexidine?
- bactericidal, fungicidal, and effective against many viruses
- nonirritating
- not affected by organic debris, and is safe for cats
What are the adverse side effects for chlorhexidine?
uncommon
Where can acetic acid be found?
in many otic preparations. Effective against superficial - infections of the skin and ears

What is iodine?
bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal,and sporicidal
