Ch. 10: Descending Pathways Flashcards
Medial Activation System
- axons in anterior columns
- connected to LMN in ventral horn
- 4 pathways
1. medial corticospinal tract
2. medial vestibulospinal tract
3. lateral vestibulospinal tract
4. reticulospinal tract
4 Pathways of Medial Activation System
- medial corticospinal tract
- medial vestibulospinal tract
- lateral vestibulospinal tract
- reticulospinal tract
Nonspecific Activation System
- Some UMN control excitation of other UMN
- Prep for moving quickly and easier
Lateral Corticospinal Tract:
Axons
A-alpha
Lateral Corticospinal Tract:
Function
- voluntary fine motor control of distal Mm
- fractionated movement
- (90% of fibers from precentral gyrus)
- [director UMN-lateral]
Lateral Corticospinal Tract:
Neuron Pathway
1st Order: prefrontal gyrus of cortex (cross midline in medulla) to ventral horn
2nd Order: ventral horn to periphery
Medial Corticospinal Tract:
Axons
A-alpha
Medial Corticospinal Tract:
Function
- voluntary control of proximal muscles
- (10% of neurons from precentral gyrus that don’t cross midlines)
- [director UMN-medial division]
Medial Corticospinal Tract:
Neuron Pathway
1st: precentral gyrus of cortex to ventral horn
2nd: ventral horn to periphery
(DOES NOT cross midline)
Rubrospinal Tract:
Function
- pick stuff up against gravity
- facilitate UE flexors
- [helper UMN-lateral division]
Rubrospinal Tract:
Neuron Pathway
- 1st: brainstem (cross midline) to ventral horn
- 2nd: ventral horn to periphery
Medial Vestibulospinal Tract:
Function
- Proximal Mm against gravity
- balance & equilibrium
- [helper UMN-medial division extensors]
Medial Vestibulospinal Tract:
Neuron Pathway
1st: vestibular nucleus (cross midline in medulla) to ventral horn
2nd: ventral horn to periphery
Reticulospinal Tract:
Function
- UE & LE extensors against gravity
- [helper UMN-medial division-extensors]
Reticulospinal Tract:
Neron Pathway
1st: reticular formation to ventral horn
2nd: ventral horn to periphery
